Energy Improvements in Action

Across Parkland County, ongoing upgrades to facilities are helping improve building performance, manage operating costs, and ensure spaces remain comfortable and reliable for staff and residents. These projects focus on practical improvements such as lighting upgrades, heating and cooling system replacements, and building control enhancements, targeting areas where updates can make a measurable difference.

Parkland County would like to thank the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre for their financial contribution towards our energy management projects. The Municipal Climate Change Action Centre is a partnership of Alberta Municipalities, the Rural Municipalities of Alberta, and the Government of Alberta. Funding for the Community Energy Conservation Program and the Municipal Energy Manager Program was provided by the Government of Alberta.

Below are examples of recent and upcoming projects across County-owned facilities:

Acheson Fire Station

The Acheson Fire Station was built in 2014 and is a key part of the Parkland County Fire Services network. It is one of the two main fire stations for the County (the other being the Wabamun West Central Fire Station).

Almost 130 lights across the Acheson fire station were upgraded to efficient styles in early 2026. This upgrade will reduce the electricity bill for the site by more than $1,150 per year and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 5 tonnes (the equivalent yearly emissions of an average Albertan family car).

Parkland County Centre

Parkland County Centre was built in 1997. The site includes the main county customer service center, council chambers, meeting rooms and staff offices.

165 lights were upgraded across the site from November 2025 to March 2026.

These lighting upgrades alone will reduce the energy bill for the site by $1,600 per year and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 6 tonnes (the equivalent yearly emissions of an average Albertan family car).

Jubilee Hall

The Jubilee Hall and Library is an important facility for the Wabamun community. The site includes a commercial kitchen, stage and hall area available to rent and a public library.

The windows and doors in the hall will be upgraded to be more energy efficient keeping the temperature more stable, making the hall more comfortable and also requiring less energy for heating and cooling. An upgrade to the heating, cooling and ventilation system in the hall will also be undertaken.

These upgrades will reduce the energy bill for the site by $1,400 per year and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by close to 6 tonnes (the equivalent yearly emissions of an average Albertan family car).

County Services Building

The County Services Building was built in 1997. The site includes 2 floors of office space for County staff, a public works (shop) area, Enforcement and an Animal Shelter.

Almost 160 lights are planned to be upgraded across the site. Lighting controls such as sensors and timers will also be installed to ensure lighting is only used when it is needed. In addition to lighting upgrades, 3 roof top unit heating/cooling and ventilation systems will be upgraded to more efficient units.

These upgrades will reduce the energy bill for the site by almost $5,000 per year and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 20 tonnes (the equivalent of removing approximately 4 cars off the roads).

TransAlta Tri-Leisure Centre

The Trans Alta Tri Leisure Centre is a multi-recreation facilities that includes a large aquatic complex, two ice surfaces, two field surfaces, gymnasium, fitness centre, play centre as well as tenant and meeting spaces. The centre is the main multi-recreational facilities in the Tri-Municipal Region of Spruce Grove, Stony Plain and Parkland County. Approximately 2 million visitors use the facility each year.

Parkland County are the project sponsor for planned energy management work at the centre this year. The atmospheric boilers will be upgraded at the site. The existing boilers are about 23 years old and nearing end of life expectancy.

These upgrades are expected to reduce the energy bill for the site by more than $50,000 per year and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 277 tonnes (the equivalent of removing approximately 55 cars off the roads!).
