Climate Adaptation
![]()
Weather patterns and environmental conditions are shifting in noticeable ways with each season becoming more unpredictable.
To prepare for the future and protect our quality of life from the impacts of extreme weather, Parkland County is developing a Climate Adaptation Plan to build on the work of the dissolved Edmonton Metropolitan Region Board (EMRB) who conducted a climate resilience study: From Risk to Resilience in December 2023. This study researched the risks, vulnerabilities, and opportunities that our region will face based on climate projections and impact scenarios. Now we are looking at those risks from a Parkland County perspective and creating a plan for action.
We are learning from residents, Indigenous peoples, community groups, and businesses about how they’ve been impacted, what can be done, and how we can partner together in crafting common-sense strategies which reduce the risks we all face
What is a Climate Adaptation Plan and why does it matter?
The Plan will:
- Document the impacts of extreme weather and changes in nature based on community input and scientific data.
- Identify the current and future risks to Parkland communities.
- Recommend actions and partnerships to minimize risks and build resiliency against worsening weather.

Climate Risks in Our Region
The following are examples of climate hazards:
- Flooding
- Wildland fire and smoke
- More extreme weather (tornados, rain storms)
What Can I Do Now?
- Get a FireSmart assessment
- Agricultural producers can complete an ALUS project
- Monitor outdoor air quality and improve indoor air quality
- Implement climate resilient home improvements (such as sump pumps)
- Incorporate compost
- Support local watershed groups
- Prevent the spread of invasive species
- Improve emergency preparedness
- Plant climate resilient species
- Conserve water
- Restore, enhance, or maintain wetland areas
