Deeply Rooted: The Lifelong Commitment of Susan Schafers as a Local Farmer and ASB Veteran

As a proud resident of Parkland County, Susan Schafers’ family has been farming in the Holborn area for over 60 years. For the past 10, Susan’s served on the County’s Agricultural Services Board (ASB), sharing her experience and expertise for the benefit of the County’s agricultural sector and community.

As a second‑generation pullet and cattle farmer, Susan has a B.Sc. in Agriculture and Food Business Management from the University of Alberta (U of A). In addition to her nearly 10 years with our ASB, her extensive experience includes the Frank Robinson Youth Academy at the U of A, and the Alberta Agricultural Products Marketing Council. I’m proud to be a farmer. Agriculture is one of the most important jobs you can have. We feed everyone, and everyone needs to eat.”

Susan says, “I’m proud to be a farmer. Agriculture is one of the most important jobs you can have. We feed everyone, and everyone needs to eat.”

Serving her fifth term with the ASB as a public member, Susan’s experience, education, and personal passion for agriculture is an important asset to the board and the County.

The ASB “is an advisory body” says Susan, “and we have legislated work to do on a day‑to‑day basis…The County’s Council respects advice from the ASB and there is a strong focus on wanting to hear what’s important to farmers in our community and how it affects agriculture to ensure we are able to work together strategically.” Susan says that she really enjoys working with the staff in the County and is impressed with the dedication, enthusiasm, and efficiency she sees.

Parkland County appreciates the immense support that Susan offers to our Agricultural Services Board – and agricultural community in general – and looks forward to continuing to work with her and her fellow committee members to advocate for the best interests of our agricultural community.
