Statement on Offensive Banner

We are aware of a banner displayed on private property outside of Parkland County, along Highway 779, containing racist and disparaging language directed toward Indigenous peoples. Many people have found the message hurtful, discriminatory, and contrary to the spirit of respect that we expect in our community. Parkland County strongly condemns racism and discrimination in all forms.

Indigenous people have deep histories, cultures, and valuable contributions that have shaped and continue to shape Parkland County, Alberta, and Canada. While individuals have the right to express their views within the law, messages that demean or stereotype entire groups do not reflect the values of respect, civility, and inclusion that guide our municipality and that most Canadians and Albertans expect and uphold.

“Council's responsibility is to help foster a community where disagreements can be expressed without attacking or diminishing others,” said Parkland County Mayor Rod Shaigec. “I encourage everyone to approach difficult conversations with respect, humility, and a willingness to listen, even when perspectives differ. Hateful and discriminatory messaging does not reflect the values of our community or the relationships we continue to build with our Indigenous residents, friends and neighbours."

We will continue to stand with our neighboring Indigenous communities in promoting respect and understanding as we work towards building strong relationships and safe, hate-free communities.
