Fire Prevention Week: Learn, connect, and join us for a BBQ
Fire Prevention Week runs October 4–10, 2026, and Parkland County Fire Services is inviting residents to learn how a few simple habits can help prevent fires at home.
This year’s theme is “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.” From phones and laptops to power tools, toys, e-bikes and scooters, rechargeable lithium-ion batteries are part of everyday life. When batteries are damaged or devices are charged incorrectly, they can overheat and create a fire risk.
A few simple charging habits can make a difference:
- Use the charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.
- Charge devices on a hard, flat surface such as a table or desk and not on a bed, couch or under a pillow.
- Stop using a device if it becomes very hot, begins to swell, smokes, or has an unusual smell.
- Unplug devices once they are fully charged.
- Charge larger batteries, including those for e-bikes, scooters and power tools, outside and away from exits.
