Water Conservation

Water is a necessary but limited resource and we’re encouraging all Parkland County residents to learn ways to save water at home in case of drought and the potential for water restriction measures..

Even the simplest changes to daily routines can have a significant impact. By making conservation a priority and working together, we can save water and minimize the harmful effects of drought. Start by following the water conservation tips below for ideas on how to use water wisely.

Indoor Water Conservation

Use a garbage can for waste (facial tissue, floss) instead of the toilet.
Check taps and toilets for leaks
Install water-efficient toilets that use 4.8 litres per flush compared to the older models that use 13 to 20 litres per flush.
Replace showerheads with low-flow models.
Save water by taking shorter showers – 5 minutes is a good average.
Install low-flow faucets on all bathroom sinks.
Turn the water off while brushing your teeth, shaving, or washing your face.

Wash a small amount of dishes by hand when necessary.
Use the dishwasher only when you have a full load.
Keep a jug of drinking water in the fridge so you don’t have to run the tap to get cold water.
Wash your fruits and vegetables in a pan of water instead of running water from the tap and
use the remaining water for indoor or outdoor plants.

Wash full loads of laundry rather than smaller loads.
Consider switching to high efficiency machines if possible

Outdoor Water Conservation

Aerate your lawn once a year, spring or fall, to improve water penetration.
Skip a week of watering if it rains. When your lawn turns slightly brown, it is simply dormant; not dead. It will turn green again shortly after a rainfall.
Less frequent watering encourages deeper, healthier lawn roots.
Water your lawn during the coolest part of the day (early morning or late evening) and avoid windy or hot days to reduce water loss through evaporation.
Avoid walking on and mowing the grass during periods of drought to reduce additional stress.
Your lawn will go dormant during hot and dry spell and may turn yellow or brown, but it will turn green again once the dry or hot spell is over. Using water collected in a rain barrel to water your lawn is a great alternative.

Place plants with similar water requirements close together.
Increase the soil’s water retention by adding compost.
Add a layer of mulch around the base of trees and shrubs to reduce weed growth and evaporation.

Your lawn and garden cannot store water for a long time, so don’t overwater to cover times you will be away.

Use automatic timers or sprinklers if you will be leaving during watering.
Make sure hoses and irrigation equipment are in good condition. Check regularly for leaks or blockages and shut outdoor taps off tightly after use.
Purchase a rain barrel to collect rainwater from your roof.
Use a drip irrigation system. This system is the most effective because it directs water to the root zone.
Clean your sidewalks and driveways with a broom or a brush rather than using a hose.
