Second Annual Community Round Dance a Resounding Success

Parkland County’s second annual Community Round Dance, held at Jubilee Hall in Wabamun, was a resounding success, drawing participants from across the region to celebrate culture, connection, and community. This vibrant event honors Indigenous traditions, bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds to share in ceremony, food, and dance.

Round Dances hold deep cultural significance for Indigenous communities. Rooted in tradition, they are a powerful expression of unity, healing, and respect. During the dance, elders, youth, families, and visitors join hands in a circle, moving together to the beat of the drum. This circular formation symbolizes equality and the idea that we are all connected.

For the community of Wabamun and surrounding areas, the Round Dance is more than a cultural event—it serves as a bridge between generations, cultures, and communities, fostering understanding, strengthening social ties, and creating space for reflection and celebration. Events like these are vital in advancing reconciliation and nurturing a shared sense of belonging.

This year’s Round Dance reminds us of the power of coming together, offering space for reflection, learning, and celebration. Parkland County is proud to support events that honour Indigenous traditions and promote community connection.

We were truly honored to have several respected Elders join us for the Wabamun Round Dance. Their presence brought warmth, wisdom, and a deep sense of tradition to the gathering. It was a privilege to learn from them and to share in the evening together.

We extend our sincere thanks to:

  • Elder Howard Mustus Sr. – Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation
  • Elder Phyllis Mustus – Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation
  • Elders’ Helper Howard (Howie) Mustus Jr. – Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation
  • Elder Ray Daniels – Lac Ste. Anne Métis Community Association
  • Elder Kokum Violet Poitras – Paul First Nation

Their contributions and teachings enriched the experience for everyone in attendance. We are grateful for their generosity in sharing their time, stories, and spirit with our community.

Thank you to all who attended, volunteered, and helped make the Round Dance a meaningful and memorable evening. We look forward to continuing this tradition and deepening our relationships in the years to come.
