Reducing Household Waste

Did You Know: one of the objectives in our Integrated Community Sustainability Plan is the diversion of solid waste from landfills. Even small changes in lifestyle can significantly reduce waste! For more information, visit Reducing Household Waste - Parkland County.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

The ‘3Rs' are the golden rules of responsible waste management.

Reduce:

  • Buy only what you need
  • Buy durable; avoid single use
  • Prefer products made from recycled materials
  • Rent, borrow, or buy second-hand
  • Share with a neighbor

Re-use

  • Repair damaged items and clothing
  • Donate or sell lightly used items
  • Use rechargeable batteries
  • Consider reusable razors, diapers, and feminine products
  • Repurpose items for DIY projects
  • Pack lunches in reusable containers

Donate items in good condition to Parkland County's Take-It-Or-Leave-It program at the Parkland County, Kapasiwin, or Seba Beach transfer stations. For information on what is accepted, visit Transfer Stations - Parkland County.

Recycle

Parkland County currently has three recycling centers. Items delivered to the recycling center should be clean of liquid, food, or dirt. For a list of accepted items, visit: What Goes Where? - Parkland County. Some transfer stations accept blue bag, electronics, or metal recycling.

Reducing Food Waste

  • Over 60% of food waste generated in Canada is easily avoidable.
  • Plan out your meals and buy only what you need
  • Avoid impulse purchases of perishable items
  • Freeze, can, dry, or press extra produce
  • Revive limp vegetables with a soak in ice water
  • Store food in the correct part of the fridge. Generally, the bottom shelf is the coldest and the door is the warmest. Use the high-humidity drawer for wilt-prone veggies, and low-humidity for fruits.

Any food waste should be composted. For more information, visit Composting - Parkland County

Disposal

If disposal is unavoidable, use the proper method. Visit Garbage and Recycling - Parkland County for information on waste sorting and disposal.
