National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Each year on September 30, we reflect on the ongoing impacts of residential schools and honour the Survivors, their families, and Indigenous communities. This year, the following events will take place in the Tri-Region on September 30:

Stony Plain - Heritage Park, 10:00 a.m.

Together for Truth and Reconciliation Truth and Reconciliation - Town of Stony Plain

Spruce Grove - Horizon Stage, 6:30 p.m.

An Evening for Reflection and Connection National Day for Truth and Reconciliation - Horizon Stage

Please note that all Parkland County Centre offices and transfer stations will be closed on September 30.

‘The Orange Shirt Story’

Additionally, beginning today (Friday, September 26), ‘The Orange Shirt Story’ by Phyllis Webstad will be displayed as a StoryWalk in the trails at Coal Diamond Sports Park, Wabamun & at Prospectors Point. The story is a true account of Phyllis Webstad, a residential school survivor, who had her new orange shirt taken away on her first day at school. This event symbolized the stripping away of Indigenous children’s identity and connection to their culture within the residential school system.

We acknowledge that we are located on the lands of Treaty 6 which is the traditional home of the Cree, Dene, Saulteaux, Blackfoot, Nakota Sioux nations, members of the Metis nations of Alberta, Inuit and all First Nations sharing this land for generations. We recognize the long history and contributions of Indigenous peoples who’ve cared for this land from time immemorial to the present. We acknowledge that we are all treaty people bound to one another by the spirit and intent of treaty as long as the sun shines, the grass grows, and the river flows.
