Fire at GFL Waste Management Landfill
Update: November 19 @ 3:00 pm
The GFL landfill remains under a fire control order. Firefighting crews have been diligently working to manage the situation, and as of now, the active fire areas have been successfully capped with soil. GFL is continuously monitoring and managing any hot spots as they surface to ensure the situation remains under control.
Alberta Environment is closely monitoring any potential changes in air quality resulting from the ongoing underground fire to ensure the safety and well-being of the community.
There are currently limitations on the materials that can be accepted at the landfill site. However, these restrictions may be adjusted as conditions change.
Update: November 14, 2025 @ 4:00pm
GFL has informed Parkland County that they have established a dedicated phone number for enquiries related to the fire. Residents with questions or concerns are encouraged to call 1-888-359-0796.
Update: November 12, 2025 @ 2:20 pm
On the evening of Sunday, November 9, Parkland County Fire Services responded to a fire at the GFL landfill off 231 Street NW, east of Acheson. The fire began in the southwest section of the site, which contains a mix of construction and demolition waste. Parkland County fire crews remained onsite until approximately midnight on Sunday.
Due to the nature of the site and the fire conditions – and under the advisement of Parkland County Fire Services – site owners GFL Waste Management have engaged specialist industrial fire-fighting contractors to contain the fire. The specialist contractors are on site, and firefighting efforts are continuing around the clock. A large volume water supply has been established on site, and soil and heavy equipment is being used to smother the fire and reduce smoke spread as much as possible. It is anticipated, however, that the fire will continue to burn for some time. Parkland County will continue to work with GFL on their fire management strategy to minimize impacts to health and environment.
Air health quality for surrounding residents is a paramount concern, and all efforts are being made to minimize smoke spread.
Air quality health monitoring is carried out by Alberta Environment and Protected Areas. Residents can access the Alberta Air Health Index map for the latest air quality monitoring information.
Parkland County is actively coordinating with Alberta Environment to ensure comprehensive monitoring and appropriate public safety measures are in place. Residents concerned about smoke in their area, or those with underlying health concerns, are encouraged to take appropriate steps to minimize exposure.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Due to the nature of the materials involved, determining a definitive cause may prove challenging, however Parkland County Fire Services’ investigation team continues to gather all available information.
Parkland County has ordered that the landfill suspend all regular operations and remain closed until the fire is managed and risk is not present.
