Congratulations to Parkland County's Star Lady - Joan Marie Galat

Joan Marie Galat has a unique way of looking up at the stars. She is well known as the “star-lady” because of her appeal as an author of children’s science books. Her impressive repertoire of writing has made her an award-winning author of more than 25 books, with translations in seven languages. A prolific promoter of reading, Joan is often busy at various speaking engagements across Canada and internationally. She promotes literacy, science and other topics in her books, and encourages the use of storytelling to communicate in corporate settings. She is also a Parkland County Arts & Culture Award of Excellence recipient for 2024.

Parkland County is proud to recognize the athletic, arts and cultural and agricultural achievements of teams or individuals representing the County in provincial, national or international competitions. Our Awards of Excellence Program was developed to acknowledge outstanding achievements. Joan, being a passionate local author, naturally stands out as an exceptional contributor to arts and culture.

Joan has been a proud resident of Parkland County for 20 years. Her literary achievements have been honoured with a vivid accounting of her skill set, thanks to Karen Ann Spafford-Fitz, who nominated her for the award. “Since the inception of her writing career as an underage columnist, Joan has held true to her artistic vision: to create compelling titles that engage readers while cultivating communities where books and the art of writing are cherished,” says Karen.
