Champions of the Parkland County Libraries Society
The Champions of the Parkland County Libraries Society is a group of dedicated volunteers, formed in 2021, to promote and support Parkland County libraries in Duffield, Keephills, Entwistle, Tomahawk and Wabamun.
The Director of the Society is Kathy Gardiner who was hired in 2009 as the first librarian to oversee four rural public libraries in the hamlets of Duffield, Entwistle, Keephills and Tomahawk. “I have had the privilege of watching our libraries evolve dramatically in response to community changes and needs and technological changes,” says Kathy. Highlighting that libraries are unique, offering traditional services while being multi-faceted community spaces, she says “we’ve shifted from simply providing materials to actively creating experiences.”
Now available at Parkland County libraries are expanded digital collections, online learning opportunities and e-resources, with added connectivity within the Yellowhead Regional library network to enable access to millions of titles virtually and from across the province.
Deeply Rooted in our Communities
"Rural libraries are special because they are deeply rooted in our communities," says Kathy. "Every day, I get to see how a small library can make an enormous impact. What excites me the most is the creativity and flexibility that rural libraries require, with no two days being the same. We are constantly adapting and innovating to meet local needs. What makes me smile are the small moments: staff celebrating program successes, patrons sharing stories, volunteers going above and beyond, and the genuine sense of community that fills each library."
Partnerships are Essential
With dedicated staff and volunteers, our libraries are full of people who are passionate and committed to the needs of our residents. Through their experience, creativity, and support, our libraries continue to grow and flourish. Kathy says, "I'm proud of the partnerships we've built with schools, local organizations, and municipalities. I've been deeply honoured to mentor staff, champion rural library needs at regional and provincial levels, and be an advocate for rural public libraries. Above all, the relationships formed over the years - with patrons, staff, volunteers, and community partners - are what make this work meaningful and fulfilling."
