Animal Health: Responsible Livestock Ownership and EHV-1 Alert

Owning livestock or horses comes with important responsibilities that help protect animal health and prevent the spread of disease. In Alberta, certain animal diseases must be reported immediately under the Animal Health Act, and properties with livestock or horses must be registered under the Premises Identification Regulation. This registration, called Premises ID, helps track animals during disease outbreaks or emergencies so they can be protected quickly.

Good biosecurity practices are essential, especially with recent cases of Equine Herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) in Alberta. EHV-1 is a contagious virus that can cause a serious neurological condition called Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy (EHM). While vaccination helps reduce risk, it does not guarantee full protection, making biosecurity measures critical at home and at events.

What horse owners can do:

  • Follow biosecurity rules at home and when traveling.
  • Talk to your veterinarian about EHV-1 vaccination.
  • Check event status and safety protocols before attending.
  • Stay informed about outbreaks.
