Energy Management

Parkland County is committed to reducing energy use, lowering utility costs, and supporting a cleaner, more resilient future for everyone who lives, works, and plays here.

Through thoughtful planning and smart energy practices, we’re improving the energy performance of County facilities while helping our community access tools and information that make energy savings choices easier.

What we're doing

We’re upgrading lighting, heating and cooling systems, and building controls to reduce energy waste and keep our facilities comfortable and efficient.

The County monitors energy use across its facilities to identify opportunities for improvement, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and reduce energy bills.

By improving efficiency and adopting cleaner technologies, we’re working toward long-term environmental goals that benefit the entire community.

How you can save energy at home

Small changes add up! Here are a few easy ways to cut energy use and lower your utility bills:

  • Switch to LED lighting – they last longer and use up to 75% less energy
  • Unplug unused electronics – Many devices draw power even when turned off
  • Use programmable thermostats – Save energy by adjusting heating and cooling automatically
  • Seal drafts – Simple weatherstripping and caulking can significantly reduce heat loss
  • Wash clothes in cold water – It's easier on clothes and reduces energy use

Home Energy Efficiency Kits

Parkland County is partnering with Parkland County Libraries to offer Home Energy Efficiency Kits to our residents.

Created by the County and available to borrow through the Duffield, Entwistle, Keephills and Wabamun libraries as well as the Parkland County Centre Customer Service, Home Energy Efficiency Kits include a variety of tools that will allow residents to assess their current energy consumption, discover opportunities for efficiencies and potential cost savings, and see the associated environmental impacts. Five kits are available for loan.

Residents will find the following tools in the kit:

Thermal scanners use infrared sensors to detect heat and generate thermal images, highlighting variations in temperature. This information can be used to detect air leaks, identify areas where insulation is inadequate, or assess the performance of heating/cooling systems providing valuable data for homeowners looking to improve energy efficiency and reduce utility bills.

Use these thermometers to monitor the temperature inside your fridge or freezer to help identify issues that may lead to higher energy consumption. Adjusting the temperature to match an appliance’s recommended settings can lead to significant savings.

Radon is a radioactive, colourless, odourless, and tasteless gas that can accumulate in the basements and lower levels of homes and is a recognized health hazard. Radon detectors measure the concentration of radon gas in the air for comparison against the World Health Organization (WHO) Action Levels and Health Canada Action Levels.

A combination thermometer and hygrometer measures household temperatures and humidity levels simultaneously. Using this data to optimize heating and cooling systems can improve energy efficiency while enhancing comfortability.

Wattmeters measure the electrical energy consumed by household appliances in Kilowatt-hours (kWh). Readings can be used to determine how much an appliance costs to run over time. These insights are helpful in monitoring energy usage and evaluating efficiency.

Indoor air quality monitors that measure CO2 levels and Particulate Matter (PM2.5) are valuable tools for assessing the health and safety of indoor environments. Better ventilation can improve air quality, reduce health risks, and improve energy efficiency.

Found areas of your home that could be more energy efficient?

You can find several tips and tricks in the Home Energy Efficiency Kit manuals for quick, easy actions that can be taken right away to start seeing results. These tips focus on everyday changes that are low-effort, low-cost, and high-impact.

Ready for more?

If you’re ready for bigger impacts, check out the Upgrades to Consider section in the Home Energy Efficiency Kits manual. This section offers recommendations for larger improvements or investments that can build on what you’ve learned.

Depending on the upgrade, it could be eligible for Government incentives and programs as available. Keep up to date on opportunities here www.nrcan.gc.ca.

This program is funded by the FortisAlberta Save Energy Program.
