Proclamation for the month of September. 

September 2025 

WHEREAS: Muscular Dystrophy is a group of neuromuscular disorders that have no known cure. In almost all cases, there are few treatments and no way to stop the disorder’s progression. Muscular Dystrophy Canada is a national, non-profit organization committed to funding research into the causes, treatments, and eventual cure of neuromuscular disorders, as well as providing services to people with neuromuscular disorders and public education.

WHEREAS; People today have the opportunity to live longer lives because of breakthroughs in medical research, and

WHEREAS; Muscular dystrophy is a neuromuscular disorder that affects many and has no known cure, and

WHEREAS; Only through the support of the community may a cure be found;

THEREFORE; Parkland County Council does hereby declare September 2025 as “Muscular Dystrophy Awareness Month” in Parkland County.

September 2025

WHEREAS; Alberta Culture Days began in 2008 as Alberta Arts Day, a one-day event to recognize the value of Alberta's arts and cultural communities.

WHEREAS; Since then, it has expanded into a vibrant, three day, province-wide celebration that has helped inspire the creation of Culture Days - a pan-Canadian movement to raise the awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of all Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities.

WHEREAS; In 2024, around 246,000 Albertans discovered, experienced, and celebrated our artistic sector, heritage, cultural diversity and provincial pride through events in 59 communities.

WHEREAS; Alberta Culture Days will continue to showcase the province's arts, multicultural, heritage and nonprofit/voluntary organizations; creative industries and individual artists, while encouraging all Albertans to discover the important contributions of culture to a prosperous, vibrant society.

THEREFORE; Parkland County Council does hereby declare September 2025 as Alberta Culture Days in Parkland County. Discover, experience, and celebrate our unique blend of peoples and passions, and the importance of culture to a healthy and vibrant Alberta.

September 7 - 13, 2025

WHEREAS; The issue of suicide affects families in all communities, including our community;

WHEREAS; The reported contemplated suicides in Alberta numbered more than 500 per year;

WHEREAS; Suicide is consistently a leading cause of death among Albertans;

WHEREAS; Our community is committed to raising awareness and preventing suicide as a great many are preventable;

THEREFORE; Parkland County Council does hereby declare the week of September 7 – 13, 2025 as “Suicide Prevention Week” in Parkland County.

September 7, 2025

WHEREAS; We seek to strengthen the values of family, it is appropriate we recognize that grandparents have made, and continue to make, many contributions to enrich our province, towns, communities, and our daily lives;

WHEREAS; Grandparents are a vital part of our families, who give generously of their wisdom, experience, and love;

WHEREAS; We honour our grandparents for their skills, knowledge, experience, and leadership;

THEREFORE; Parkland County Council does hereby declare Sunday, September 7, 2025, to be National Grandparents Day and we call upon everyone in our community to join in the celebration and recognize the valuable contributions of Grandparents.

September 20, 2025

WHEREAS; The Canadian Kennel Club, the primary registry for purebred dogs in Canada and a national non-profit organization, promotes the benefits that pets bring to our society and is committed to the furthering of responsibility for the ownership of pets in Canada; and

WHEREAS; The Canadian Kennel Club initiative, National Responsible Pet Ownership Week, brings together likeminded organizations that provide support, advice, guidance, and education in the responsibilities of having a pet and therefore promoting safer communities throughout Canada;

THEREFORE; Parkland County Council does hereby declare Saturday, September 20, 2025, as “Responsible Pet Ownership Day”, in support of responsible pet ownership and a safer community for all citizens.

September 8 - 14, 2025

WHEREAS; In September, Canadians continue Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope which he began when he dipped his artificial leg in the Atlantic Ocean on April 12, 1980 and proceeded to unite Canadians;

WHEREAS; on September 1, 1980, cancer returned to Terry’s lungs and his run ended.;

WHEREAS; Terry’s words echo with Canadian’s today: “Even if I don’t finish, we need others to continue. It’s got to keep going.”

WHEREAS; on the third Sunday in September, we continue the Marathon in Hope with our annual Terry Fox Run, raising funds for the important work of cancer research;

THERFORE; Parkland County Council does hereby proclaim September 8 - 14, 2025 as Terry Fox Week in Parkland County with the theme “No Matter What”. Parkland County Council encourages all residents to reflect back on Terry’s Dream and consider participation in the Tri-Region Terry Fox Run on Sunday, September 14, 2025.

September 15 - 21, 2025

WHEREAS; Rail Safety Week is to be held across Canada from September 15 – 21, 2025;

WHEREAS; 261 railway crossing and trespassing incidents caused accidents in Canada in 2024; resulting in 68 avoidable fatalities and 58 avoidable serious injuries;

WHEREAS; educating and informing the public about rail safety (reminding the public that railway rights-of-way are private property, enhancing public awareness of the dangers associated with highway rail grade crossings, ensuring pedestrians and motorists are looking and listening while near railways, and obeying established traffic laws) will reduce the number of avoidable fatalities and injuries caused by accidents involving trains and citizens;

WHEREAS; Operation Lifesaver is a public/private partnership whose aim is to work with the public, rail industry, governments police services, media and others to raise rail safety awareness;

WHEREAS; CN has requested Parkland County Council adopt this resolution in support of its ongoing efforts to raise awareness, save lives and prevent injuries in communities, including our municipality;

THEREFORE; Parkland County Council does hereby declare September 15-21, 2025 as "Rail Safety Week” in Parkland County.

September 28, 2025

Celebrated in Canada since 2006, Right to Know Week raises awareness about people’s right to access government information while promoting freedom of information as essential to both democracy and good governance.

WHEREAS; Parkland County is dedicated to the principles of open, transparent government and is accountable to the citizens it serves;

WHEREAS; Alberta’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act grants citizens the right of access to information in the custody and control of Parkland County;

WHEREAS; Access to information provides individuals with knowledge about their government and community; and gives them the opportunity to be active participants in the democratic process.

WHEREAS; Parkland County supports Right to Know Week as a way to raise awareness and promote access to information as an important part of public accountability and transparency,

THEREFORE; Parkland County Council does hereby declare Saturday, September 28, 2024 as "International Right to Know Day" in Parkland County.

September 30, 2025

WHEREAS, Indigenous Peoples have been the stewards of the land, water, air, animals, and each other since time immemorial;

WHEREAS; National Day for Truth and Reconciliation has been observed annually since 2021 (also known colloquially as Orange Shirt Day since 2013) to acknowledge that the harm from Residential Schools has negatively impacted Indigenous Peoples, communities, and all Canadians and caused trauma felt throughout generations;

WHEREAS; This day provides space to learn about and reflect on the injustices perpetrated against Indigenous Peoples, to honour their past, and remember the survivors of residential schools, as well as those who did not survive;

WHEREAS; Truth Telling, Decolonization, Reconciliation, and Indigenization present opportunities for all Canadians to engage in healing and to build a shared understanding of the historical impacts that shape the experiences of Indigenous Peoples;

WHEREAS; The acknowledgement and understanding of intentional and systemic efforts to assimilate Indigenous Peoples continues to impact Indigenous Peoples and their Nations across Turtle Island (North America). Truth and Reconciliation is an active and ongoing commitment from individuals, communities and government to understand painful truths of the past and promote collaborative healing for the future;

WHEREAS; Despite systemic discrimination, prejudice, and injustice, Indigenous Peoples continue to collectively and meaningfully impact society, and the land that we inhabit, which results in vibrant and resilient communities across Turtle Island, including Parkland County;

WHEREAS; Parkland County Council is committed to building meaningful relationships, built on mutual trust and respect, with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples, and the surrounding communities, such as the Paul First Nation, Enoch Cree Nation, Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation, Michel First Nation, Alexander First Nation, and the Lac Ste Anne Métis;

THEREFORE; Parkland County Council do hereby proclaim September 30th, 2025 as National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Parkland County and encourage citizens to participate in public commemorations that honour past truths, and which promote reconciliation.
