June 15, 2022Parkland County has fully executed the contract for the South Side Boat Launch. Work should begin shortly with an anticipated end date of September with operations beginning in the 2023 season. March 29, 2021 |
Background
Wabamun Lake is an extremely popular destination for Parkland County residents and visitors. The ever increasing recreational use is causing a great deal of pressure of existing boat launches and informal access points.
Results of the 2013 Wabamun Boat Launch study showed the need to:
-
expand and enhance the boat launches at the Village of Wabamun and Wabamun Lake Provincial Park
-
develop a public boat launch on the south side of the lake
-
maintain informal access points for use by adjacent residents and formalize access controls
The Village of Wabamun will be upgrading its boat launch facility with funding support from Parkland County and the Province of Alberta. The Wabamun Provincial Park has expanded parking at its launch. Parkland County Council approved funding for land acquisition and construction of a new south side boat launch that is set to be completed in 2021.
About the project
An adhoc committee was established, comprised of representatives from surrounding Lake Wabamun Municipalities, TransAlta, Wabamun Watershed Management Council and the Province of Alberta. The committee recommended two phases to the project, which were accepted by the Parkland County Council and the councils of Wabamun Lake's other surrounding municipalities.
Phase I: Develop a new boat launch on the south side of the lake
Parkland County is looking at developing a new boat launch on the south side of Lake Wabamun.
Phase II: Close the informal access points along the lake (with limited access) after the new boat launch is complete
Parkland County residents near the identified informal access points will be invited to engagement opportunities.
