Background
Wabamun Lake is an extremely popular destination for Parkland County residents and visitors. The ever increasing recreational use is causing a great deal of pressure on existing boat launches and informal access points. Parkland County Council approved funding for land acquisition and construction of a new south side boat launch in 2016.
Since the initial funding approval decision was made, additional improvements have been made at other boat launches on Wabamun Lake. The former Village of Wabamun upgraded its boat launch facility at Waterfronk Park in 2018 with funding support from Parkland County and the Province of Alberta. The Wabamun Provincial Park has expanded parking at its boat launch.
The Boat Launch began construction in 2021 and most of the work has been completed. Since then, water levels have noticeably changed and upon completion of a depth survey, it was identified that significant areas of high spots were present creating unsafe navigational challenges out of the launch area. Dredging of the high spots is required before the facility is safe for use. The high spots will be removed leaving a center channel clearance of approximately six feet.
About the project
An adhoc committee was established, comprised of representatives from surrounding Lake Wabamun Municipalities, TransAlta, Wabamun Watershed Management Council and the Province of Alberta. The committee recommended two phases to the project, which were accepted by the Parkland County Council.
Phase I: Develop a new boat launch on the south side of the lake
Phase II: Close the informal access points along the lake (with limited access) after the new boat launch is complete
