Choosing a pet

Looking to bring a pet into your home?

Consider the following when selecting your new furry friend:
Size

what role will the dog play in your family?

Age of family members

some dogs may not be suitable for young children or seniors.

Activity level

some breeds, regardless of size, require significant ammounts of exercise.

Lifestyle

do you spend alot of time at home or are a family on the go?

Puppy or adult

do you have the time and patience to spend training a puppy?

Grooming

some breeds, regardless of coat length, may shed and/or require regular grooming.

Dog or cat

consider your lifestyle, activity level and age of family members to know if a dog or cat will work best to join your family.

Allergies

take all household members to visit the dog before considering adoption - even hypoallergenic breeds can cause an allergic reaction.

Remember to research the breed(s) you are considering, discuss the breed(s) with those who know about them: veterianarians, kennel owners, dog trainers and/or Parkland County animal shelter staff.
