Worksite Safety
Before you call for an inspection, make sure your site is ready and safe for yourself and for Parkland County staff!
Inspections in occupied homes |
To prepare for an inspection in an occupied home:
- Make sure you have a valid permit for the work and the work is complete
- An individual over the age of 18 must be present for the inspection
- All pets must be secured or contained
- Access to the home, such as driveways and sidewalks, must be clear and unobstructed
- The property address must be visible
- Full access must be arranged prior to visit (e.g. gates, locks, security systems)

Inspections - all others |
To prepare for all other inspections, make sure you’ve read the requirements below and follow applicable Occupational Health & Safety Regulations:
Housekeeping
- Keep the worksite clean and remove construction debris, materials or equipment that could cause trips or falls
- Access locations must be clear and unobstructed
Portable Ladders
- Secured (tied off, safety feet, cleats, etc.) and placed on a stable and level base
- Siderails must extend at least 1 metre above the surface
- Slope of 1:4 when against a wall (1 out and 4 up)
- Sufficient to hold 300lbs
Temporary Ramps
- Strong enough to support workers
- At least 600 millimetres wide
- Toe boards and guard rails installed (see OH&S Regulations for when required)
- Properly secured
- Sufficient traction
Temporary Stairways
- Width of the treads and height of the rise are uniform
- Treads are level
- Handrails installed (see OH&S Regulations for when required)
- At least 600 millimetres wide
Openings
- Floor openings have appropriate guardrails (i.e. second story open to below)

Note: Section 34(1) of the Safety Codes Act states
34(1) For the purpose of ensuring that this Act and any thing issued under this Act are complied with, a safety codes officer may, without a warrant, at any reasonable time, enter any premises or place, except a private dwelling place that is in use as a dwelling, in which the officer has reason to believe there is something to which this Act applies and may, using reasonable care, carry out an inspection, review designs and examine and evaluate quality management systems and manufacturing and construction processes.
