In April 2017, the federal government introduced the Cannabis Act (Bill C-45) to legalize recreational cannabis as of October 17, 2018. While legalization itself is a federal decision, every province and municipality is responsible for creating their own regulations to set laws and guidelines for cannabis production, sale, and use.
What you need to know
On September 11, 2018, Parkland County Council passed the Consumption of Cannabis in Public Places Bylaw 2018-17 which sets the municipal rules for cannabis consumption in Parkland County.
Parkland County Regulations:
- Cannabis consumption in any public place – whether smoked, vaped or otherwise - is not permitted
- The County does not regulate cannabis use on private property
Federal and Provincial Regulations:
- The minimum age for purchase and consumption of cannabis in Alberta is 18 years old
- Driving while under the influence of cannabis is illegal
- Having cannabis within reach inside a vehicle is not allowed
- 30 grams of dried cannabis is the most you can buy or carry at a time
- A maximum of four cannabis plants can be grown in a single household
- Cannabis can only be purchased from licensed stores or albertacannabis.org
- Children are not allowed to enter cannabis stores, even with an adult
