Parkland County is committed to improving the way we use energy to reduce the impacts on the environment. We accomplish this through:

Home efficiency

  • Private energy advisors can help you assess your home's energy usage
  • Assess your home easily using a home energy toolkit
  • Contact the Community Sustainability Team below about home audits and retrofit grants

Dark sky policy

Light pollution:

  • Decreases visibility at night
  • Wastes energy
  • Disrupts wildlife
  • Affects human health

The Dark Sky Outdoor Lighting Policy ensures all new and retrofitted street lighting and flood lighting on private and County-managed lands is dark sky compliant. This means the light bulb must be fully shaded or sunken in the fixture to prevent light dispersion upwards and conserve energy.

LED/HPS lighting

Parkland County also requires LED or HPS lighting in this policy. LED/HPS lights:

  • Are more efficient
  • Use less energy to produce the same amount of light
  • Have longer lifecycles

To learn more, visit the International Dark-Sky Association or the County of Strathcona's Dark Sky and Energy Efficient Lighting Handbook (PDF).

Renewable energy

Water, solar and wind are examples of renewable energy sources. Switching to renewable energy doesn't have to be a difficult process. Options include:

Purchase renewable energy

  • Companies like Bullfrog Power use 100% wind and hydro energy to generate electricity, costing the average home less than $1 a day.
  • Renewable-Energy Certificates (RECs) - Sold in kWh or MWh, RECs support new and existing renewable energy facilities. In May 2012, Parkland County was awarded a REC for purchasing 506,005 kWh of green power.

Generate renewable energy

If you want to produce heat or electricity on a small scale, review Alberta's Micro-Generation Regulation.

  • Solar Photovoltaic (PV) energy systems - or solar panels use the sun's energy to generate electricity and can be installed on buildings or in open spaces
  • Wind turbines - use wind energy to generate electricity and are best situated in open, windy areas
  • Geothermal heat pumps - transfer thermal energy either to or from buildings depending on the season. Learn more about geothermal energy in Alberta.

Visit the Pollution Probe website to learn more about green power in Alberta.
