Air quality
Poor air quality affects vegetation, wildlife and our health. We evaluate pollutants to measure our air quality. Alberta monitors air quality using the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI). The AQHI shows Parkland County generally has high air quality.
Climate change
The International Panel on Climate Change has stated that climate change is largely human-caused by an increase in emissions, such as greenhouse gases (GHGs) and aerosols, as well as land use changes.
Partners for Climate Protection (PCP) program
Parkland County has taken initiative to reduce climate change by joining the Partners for Climate Protection (PCP) program. This network of over 240 municipalities is committed to reducing GHGs and acting on climate change. Parkland County is working on a five milestone framework for reducing local GHG emissions and is in the process of completing Milestone 3.
Milestone 1: Create a GHG inventory and forecast |
Corporate and community greenhouse gas emissions inventory and forecast (2010) Gasoline and diesel fuel for transportation and electricity produce the largest gas emissions.
|
Milestone 2: Set an emission reduction target |

|
Milestone 3: Develop a local action plan for reduction |
Our GHG Reduction Plan outlines initiatives to reduce community and corporate emissions, and improve Parkland's air quality. Corporate programs that have positively affected municipal GHG emissions include:
Community programs include:

Milestone 4: Implementation of the plan |
