A building permit is your formal permission to begin a construction/demolition related work on your property in Parkland County.

Do I need a building permit for my project?

Building permits are required for:

  • New buildings

  • Building additions

  • Renovations or alterations

  • Relocation of buildings

  • Hot tubs/pools

  • Decks

  • Demolition

For most construction/demolition projects, approval for a development permit may be necessary before you get approval for a building permit.

It is an offence, under the Alberta Safety Codes Act, to start any work without a valid permit. Permit fees will be doubled if work is started without a permit. The Government of Alberta also provides a tip sheet that explains whether you may need a building permit or not for your project.

If you are unsure if your project requires a building permit, or if you have any questions about trade permits or the application process, please contact us by phone at 780-968-8888 ext 7300 or by email at safetycodes@parklandcounty.com.

How to apply for a building permit

Parkland County has an online system, PLANit Parkland, where you can apply for permits! Our system makes it easier to apply, track your application status and correspondence, and view your approved permits¬ all from one place – anywhere and anytime!

Who can apply?

A property owner or an authorized representative may apply for residential building permit.  Once a permit is issued, the applicant has 90 days to commence the project and work cannot be suspended/abandoned for more than 120 days.  A permit is valid for one year, however, a three month extension may be granted.

Commercial, industrial and institutional building permits may require professional involvement.

Who regulates legislation in Alberta?

The Alberta Safety Codes Act requires that all contractors and homeowners in Alberta get a safety codes permit before starting work covered by the National Building Code – 2019 Alberta Edition.

The Safety Codes Council is an independent, regulatory body made up of industry stakeholders and staff, formed by the Safety Codes Act. The Council delivers programs on behalf of the Government of Alberta to ensure that our province is designed and built with your safety in mind.
