National Seniors Day

October 1, 2023

  • WHEREAS; on October 1, communities across Canada will join together to recognize National Seniors Day;
  • WHEREAS; seniors in Parkland County are present in all aspects of our lives: they are our parents, our grandparents, our teachers, our volunteers, our mentors, our neighbours and our coworkers;
  • WHEREAS; National Seniors Day focuses on celebrating and recognizing the contributions made by seniors to better their communities, families and workplaces;
  • WHEREAS; every day, seniors right here in Parkland County make a big difference and we value what they are doing;

 

THEREFORE; The Council of Parkland County does hereby declare Sunday, October 1, 2023, as “National Seniors Day” and urge my fellow citizens to recognize the crucial role played by older Canadians in our community.

Fire Prevention Week

October 8-14, 2023

  • WHEREAS; the 2023 fire prevention theme for this period is “Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention to fire prevention”
  • WHEREAS; today’s homes burn faster than ever. You may have as little as two minutes (or even less time) to safely escape a home fire from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Your ability to get out of a home during a fire depends on early warning from smoke alarms and advance planning;
  • WHEREAS; the needless loss of lives and property as a result of fire could be significantly reduced or eliminated by individual and community fire prevention programs;
  • WHEREAS; most fires are caused by human carelessness and are both predictable and preventable if individuals are knowledgeable about fire prevention and safety;
  • WHEREAS; the members of the Fire Service and other public agencies in combining their talents and efforts can ensure a successful fight against those conditions that cause fire;
  • WHEREAS; each citizen must earnestly desire to provide a fire-safe place in which to live and work by eliminating those fire hazards that cause the loss of life, property, employment, and the resources by which we exist.
  • WHEREAS; the local efforts of the Fire Service are supported by the activities of organizations such as Fire Prevention Canada, the Council of Canadian Fire Marshals and Fire Commissioners, the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs, the Provincial Fire Chiefs Associations, and various associations of firefighters, fire instructors, and fire prevention officers.

 

THEREFORE; The Council of Parkland County does hereby designate the week of October 8 – 14, 2023 as “Fire Prevention Week”, and I call upon the citizens of Parkland County to participate in fire prevention activities at home, work and school. I also call upon all public information agencies to actively participate in a coordinated effort to provide effective fire prevention programs, which will instill in the minds of each citizen, those fire safety practices which will reduce the loss of life and property damage caused by fire.

Waste Reduction Week in Canada

October 16 - 22, 2023

  • WHEREAS; as a municipality, we are committed to conserving resources, protecting the environment, and educating the community.
  • WHEREAS; we recognize the generation of solid waste and the needless waste of water and energy resources as global environment problems and endeavor to take the lead in our community toward environmental sustainability.

 

THEREFORE; The Council of Parkland County does hereby declare October 16 – 22, 2023 as “Waste Reduction Week” in Parkland County.

Conflict Resolution Day

October 19, 2023

  • WHEREAS; Conflict Resolution Day is an international celebration held annually on the third Thursday in October.
  • WHEREAS; across Alberta a number of government and community based organizations are working together to provide dynamic events where people can access information on a spectrum of available dispute resolution processes.

 

THEREFORE; The Council of Parkland County does hereby declare Thursday, October 19, 2023 as “Conflict Resolution Day” in Parkland County.
