Acheson and Big Lake Reports and Studies
The Acheson and Big Lake Area Water Servicing Study assesses the capacity of the existing water distribution network and develops near future, long term and ultimate servicing concepts for these areas.
The Study examines the impact of current and future development on:
- water supply,
- water consumption,
- reservoir capacity,
- pumping capacity,
- the distribution system, and
- operation and maintenance.
This Study is to be used as a guide when planning future water infrastructure growth in the Acheson and Big Lake Area.
The Acheson and Big Lake Area Sanitary Sewer Servicing Study assesses the capacity of the existing sanitary sewer system and develops near future, long term and ultimate servicing concepts for the areas.
The Study examines the impacts of current and future development on the:
- sewer system,
- lift station capacity, and
- operation and maintenance.
This Study is to be used as a guide when planning future sewer infrastructure growth in the Acheson and Big Lake Area
The Acheson and Big Lake Traffic Impact Assessment ensures future traffic is realistically estimated and that the planned roadway network is suitable to accommodate continued growth
This Traffic Impact Assessment identifies roadway network requirements for the near-term, long-term and ultimate scenarios.
This Traffic Impact Assessment is to be used as a guide when planning future roadway network infrastructure growth in the Acheson and Big Lake Area.
Stormwater Water Act Fenceline Approval and Master Drainage Plans
In December 2011 Parkland County received a stormwater Fenceline Approval, Water Act Approval No. 00287756-00-00, for management of stormwater in the Acheson Industrial and Big Lake Areas. This approval was issued based on the overall drainage plan and stormwater criteria outlined in the Acheson / Big Lake Area Master Drainage Plan Amendment Application Document and the Acheson / Big Lake Area Master Drainage Plan – Amendment Document.
If developers meet the criteria outlined in the stormwater Fenceline Approval, Water Act Approval No. 00287756-00-00, they do not need to apply for separate approval under the Water Act.

Acheson / Big Lake Basin 1 Storm Design Preliminary Design ReportIn January 2013 Parkland County completed the Acheson / Big Lake Basin 1 Storm Design Preliminary Design Report. The report refined stormwater drainage concepts presented in the Master Drainage Plan documents for lands in the Fenceline Approval’s Basin 1 that lie south of the CN rail line including portions of Acheson Zone 4 and all of Acheson Zones 5,6,7 and 8. It was recommended a storm system that consisted of primarily pumped stormwater management facilities connecting to shared forcemain collector trunks and a gravity outfall trunk along Highway 60 to convey stormwater to an engineered wetland located in Lois Hole Provincial Park near Big Lake. Between 2015 and 2017, following the recommendations made in the 2013 preliminary design report, Parkland County constructed:
