Electrical Permits

ELECTRICAL PERMIT APPLICATION

A permit is required to carry out work to which the Electrical Code applies, which covers installations of wiring in or upon any land, building, or premises and shall also include the alternation, extension and repair of such wiring.  Applications are available at the Planning Services Department, County Administration office near Stony Plain, Alberta or click here to obtain a printable version.

The contractor or person performing the work is responsible to ensure that no work commences without a valid permit. The owner of the property is responsible to ensure that all required permit for work being conducted are in place.

Fees for electrical permits vary depending on on the value of the work being performed.  For detailed information, please review the fee schedule.

Application by either party, the following should be observed.

  • If the owner is applying for the permit, the contractor must not commence the work until he has received his copy.
  • If the contractor is applying for the permit, the owner should request a copy of the permit to ensure that all work is being performed under the requirement of the Safety Codes Act.
  • Some permits require the signature of the qualified trade's person. If the permit application is not qualified to sign a permit, a qualified installer must sign the permit and provide their certification number.
  • All work shall commence within ninety (90) days of permit issuance and generally expire after one year without an extension request.


Please Note:  It is an offence under the Province of Alberta - Safety Codes Act to commence any work without first obtaining a valid permit.
