Building Permits

Information Required to Obtain a Building Permit

    • Applications are available at the Planning Services Department, County Administration Office near Stony Plain, Alberta or click here to obtain a printable version.
    • Applications must be completed in full- be sure to include the "Project Value" on the application.
    • If you have any questions regarding the completion of the permit, please call the Planning Department, Safety Codes Clerk at (780) 968-8443.
    • Permits are not required for buildings under 100 sq ft (10 sq m), installation of siding or shingles or replacing windows the same size or smaller.
      Building Permit applications will not be accepted unless all necessary information, including permit fee, is attached.
  1. Site Plan

    • Plan should be reasonably accurate and drawn to scale (photocopy enlargements of a lot in a registered multi-parcel subdivision are acceptable).
    • Plan must show the dimensions of the land (lot) on which the building is to be located.
    • Plan shall accurately show the location of all buildings on, or to be placed on the land (lot) and must show the distances from the existing or proposed buildings to the two nearest property lines.

  2. Construction Drawings

    • Two (2) complete sets of plans/blueprints shall be submitted (ie: foundation plan, floor plans, building elevations and cross-sections showing all construction details), engineered floor joists and roof truss layouts.
    • Plans for housing and small buildings need not be drawn by a professional or stamped by an engineer or architect (except in special cases such as pile and grade beam, post and beam construction, long span, walls in excess of 12 feet, etc.).
    • To stay within Part Nine of the Alberta Building Code (covers housing and small buildings) and avoid any engineering requirements, a building must be under 6458 sq ft, be constructed of wood with dimensional lumber and have one of the following foundations:
      • A concrete slab 592 sq ft (55 sq m) or less (wood mud sills also)
      • A poured concrete or concrete block foundation wall on a strip footing with a minimum depth of 4ft (1.2m).
      • A preserved wood foundation (conforming to the CAN/CSA-5406 standard).
      • A pier foundation (wood blocking is allowed for mobile homes)
    • EXAMPLES OF FOUNDATIONS REQUIRING ENGINEERING
      • Pile foundations (any type)
      • Pile and grade beam foundations
      • Slab or wood mudsill foundations over 592 sq  ft (55 sq m)

  3. Certificate of Title

    • Title must be current (not older than 30 days)
    • Title must indicate the presence of any utility easements or rights-of-way.

  4. Building Permit Fee

    • Fee determined by Safety Codes Clerks upon examination of the plans or click here to obtain a printable version.

Validity of Building Permit Approval

    • Once a building permit has been issued, the permit holder has ninety (90) days within which to start building construction; otherwise,the permit will become void.
    • In order for the building permit to remain valid, building construction must not stop for more than one hundred twenty (120) consecutive days.
    • The building permit expires one year after the date of issue.

 All applicable permit should be obtained prior to the start of any construction.

      • Permit fee will double if permits are not obtained before construction/job commences.
