Reducing Transportation Emissions

Global warming has been a hot topic in recent years and it has become clear that there is a direct link between greenhouse gas emissions and the warming of our climate.  It is estimated that approximately 20% of all greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere are transportation related (Environmental Defense Fund).

Given that climate change is a global issue, incorporating some of the following tips into your lifestyle will help improve not only the air quality in our community, but also has the potential to make a global difference.

Reduce How Often You Drive

If you’re travelling a short distance (to the neighbour’s for instance) choose an alternative form of transportation.  Walking or riding a bike is a great way to stay active while reducing your carbon footprint.

Reduce Idling Time

Idling your vehicle takes an environmental toll but will also cost you money. According to BC Transit, every 10 minutes of idling will cost you one fifth of a litre in wasted fuel.  This means that if you idled your vehicle for 10 minutes every workday, you would be wasting 1 litre of gas a week.

Carpool

When driving is a necessity, carpooling is a great option.  Carpooling saves you gas money and will also reduce your personal greenhouse gas emissions.  Parkland County now offers carpool parking in the office parking lot.  We are conveniently located just south of the Yellowhead on Highway 779.  Carpool parking spots can be found at the northwest corner of the employee parking lot.

Purchase Efficient Vehicles

There are a number of hybrid and electric cars on the market today.  Owning one of these vehicles can eliminate or reduce the amount of gas you purchase.  Hybrid cars operate using two or more power sources.  Today the most common hybrid cars have both a fuel oeprated motor and an electric motor.  The following companies offer hybrid and/or electric vehicles:

Whether you are interested in purchasing a new vehicle or are just curious about how your current vehicle compares to others on the market, check out Offsetter’s Car Emissions Calculator.  The calculator compares the annual emissions of various vehicle models.
