Governance

In January 1969, the Municipal District of Stony Plain and the Stony Plain School Division combined and were officially incorporated as the County of Parkland No. 31.

On January 1, 1995, with the provincial restructuring of the education system, the County of Parkland No. 31 separated from the school division, creating two entities known as Parkland School Division No. 70 and Parkland County. The powers of Parkland County as an incorporated municipality are outlined in the Province of Alberta’s Municipal Government Act.

Parkland County Council consists of a Mayor elected at large and one Councillor for each division of Parkland County. Municipal elections are held every three years on the third Monday in the month of October pursuant to the Municipal Government Act and the Local Authorities Election Act. The last municipal election was held on October 18, 2010.
