Benefits in Fencing or Penning Your Dog

Fencing or penning your dog is a great way to provide them with room to roam while keeping them safe.  Chaining your dog may seem like an easy, inexpensive alternative to confine them, but could cause serious physical and mental harm.
  1. Chained dogs feels rejection from their families causing them to feel more anxious.
  2. Dogs tethered for long periods can also become highly aggressive.  They feel naturally protective of their territory; when confronted with a perceived threat, they respond according to their fight-or-flight instinct.  A chained dog, unable to take flight, often feels forced to fight, attacking any unfamiliar animal or person who unwittingly wanders into his or her territory.
  3. It is a misconception that chaining your dog will keep others safe from harm.  There have been numerous attacks on people by chained dogs, with up to 25% of fatal attacks being from tethered dogs.

Fencing or penning your dog can work well if these guidelines are followed:

  1. Dogs should be kept indoors at night
  2. Take your dog for regular walks
  3. Provide your dog with adequate attention
  4. Provide your dog with adequate food, water and veterinary care
  5. Ensure pens and dogs runs are a suitable size and provide shelter from the elements.
