Animal Control

Animal Control Services consists of one Animal Control Supervisor, 3 Animal Control Officers (ACO's) and 1 shelter keeper.  Animal Control Services and enforcement is provided to the residents of Parkland County.  Animal Shelter services are also provided to Stony Plain, Spring Lake, Wabamun, Seba Beach and Alberta Beach.

Duties & Functions

  • Respond to and investigate dog complaints
  • Investigate development & control matters (relating to animals)
  • Ensure public awareness and enforcement of all County bylaws (Including new Dog Bylaw 38-2006)
  • General Patrols of Parkland County
  • Issue dog licenses
  • Provide information to the public regarding animal safety and education
  • Provide care for animals within the shelter
  • Provide assistance to emergency response agencies where animal matters are involved
  • Facilitate animal adoptions
  • Assist ASPCA and other agencies
  • Enforce County Bylaws
  • Enforce Animal Protection Act and Dangerous Dogs Act

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my dog need a tag?  How much are they, and where can I get one?

Dogs are required to have a license in Parkland County.  A license can be purchased for $12.00 and is valid for the lifetime of the dog (It does not need to be renewed annually).  The license may be transferred to another dog or replaced for $2.50.  A dog license may be purchased online, from the pound, or the Parkland County Protective Services Department.

How many dogs are allowed per household in Parkland County?

Parkland County's Land Use Bylaw allows two dogs per household and three within agricultural or non-residential lands.  An application may be made to our Planning and Development Department for the approval of an additional dog.

Does Parkland County have a Cat Bylaw?

Parkland County does not have a Cat Bylaw with exception of Parkland Village.  Animal Control Officer's do not respond to Cat complaints, and only accept cats at the pound under Bylaw 13-01 - Regulating Cats within Parkland Village.  In these instances, the cat is surrendered at the expense of the person turning in the cat and shall make a declaration verifying the cat was running-at-large within Parkland Village and the circumstances of the contravention of Bylaw 13-01.

What rules and regulations are there regarding barking dogs?

No person shall allow a dog without provocation, do any of the following:  Howl or bark in such a manner to unreasonably interfere with the use and enjoyment of a person's property.  This is in effect for 24 hours a day.  A barking package may be obtained from our pound (780) 968-8458 or Protective Services at (780) 968-8400.  Please click here for more information on Barking Dogs.

How do I adopt a dog from Parkland County?

Animal for adoption can be viewed on our website at Lost/Found & Adoptable Dogs or by contacting the Animal Shelter directly.  Parkland County Animal Control promotes responsible ownership of dogs.  When a dog is adopted, the cost includes spay or neuter, vaccinations and a microchip for identification.
