NOTE:  ELIGIBILITY: HOLDINGS 2 HECTARES (5 ACRES) OR MORE IN SIZE
  • Shelterbelts provide many benefits for prairie farmers.  They reduce the wind around the yard, thus protecting buildings, reducing heating costs and controlling snow.  They protect livestock from the cold winter winds.  They also provide wildlife habitat, protect the soil and trap snow for additional moisture, and trap and store greenhouse gases.
  • Eligibility - private landowners in AB, SK, MB, BC and Peace River Regions where taxes are paid to a rural municipality, or where the land is zoned agricultural and if the holdings are 2 hectares (5 acres) or more in size; public land managers of municipal, provincial or federal departments or authorities of land that has tax-exempt status or rights held by the Crown First Nations band councils or individuals for planting on reservation land.
  • Trees are free of charge (clients must pay shipping costs).
  • Applications are accepted from June 1 to March 15 for May delivery.
  • Applications are available at Parkland County office or go to internet site at click here  (Click on Prairie Shelterbelt Program-Application for Trees; Select non-fillable or fillable format form).  Seedlings are shipped to Parkland County before May 15th - you will be notified for pick up.

Changes to program from previous years:

  • 2 hectares (5 acres) minimum to qualify for the program (previous years it was 40 acres).
  • New rating guide - in the past applications have been approved on a first come first serve basis.  Each application will now be rated based on the type of planting (riparian, field, livestock, wildlife, yard or roadside); number of seedlings applied for and species composition.
  • Hybrid poplars will now be sent as a mix and no longer available as a single species.
  • No more free plastic mulch.  In the past, the Shelterbelt Enhancement Program provided free plastic mulch for weed control, this program has now expired.  Clients must now purchase their own plastic mulch.  However, PFRA still supplies the plastic mulch applicators.
