Capital Region Board
Alberta's Capital Region Board (CRB) was officially established on April 15, 2008, and consists of mayors from 25 municipalities in the Alberta Capital Region. Parkland County is represented by Mayor Rob Wiedeman with Deputy Mayor Tracey Melnyk serving as alternate.
Created by the Provincial government, the CRB is mandated to jointly develop a long-range regional growth management plan by March 31, 2009. The regional plan is required to manage four priority areas:
Regional land-use planning
To identify residential, commercial, industrial and protected areas, and core infrastructure including roads, rail, pipelines, transit and utility corridors
Inter-municipal transit
To plan a public transportation network
Geographic information
To develop an electronic system for municipalities to share planning and geographic information
Affordable and attainable housing
To determine the location and quantity of low-income and market-affordable housing required in the Capital Region. The participating municipalities in the CRB are:
|
Beaumont |
Gibbons |
Morinville |
Stony Plain |
An update from Parkland County
The CRB’s sub-committees are all working hard in their prospective areas; regional transit, land use, social housing, geographic information systems (GIS) and Board governance. The Capital Region Board has formally approved vision statements and guiding principles for the Transit Committee, the GIS Committee, and Housing Committee.
Phase One of public consultation is complete, with a wide cross-section of stakeholders, including business organizations (such as the Chambers of Commerce), industry, nonprofit organizations, social, educational and environmental agencies, as well as staff from the member municipalities being interviewed. Phase Two is currently being rolled out and will include an opportunity for interested parties and residents to provide feedback on the CRB website.
The board is currently reviewing initial concepts and draft plans.
