Major Industries
The primary industries in Parkland County include power generation, forestry, coal, oil and gas, advanced manufacturing, transportation, distribution, agriculture and tourism.
Power Generation
As home to one of Canada’s largest non-regulated power generation companies, TransAlta, Parkland County has a great deal to offer businesses in this industry. This includes businesses directly involved in power generation as well as those that supply equipment and services for the production, transmission and distribution of electric power.
Forestry
Parkland County is highly-regarded as a prime destination for businesses in forestry. In fact, the County has recently experienced significant growth in this area to include manufacturing commodity lumber as well as the production and exportation of lumber, pulp, fibreboard, remanufactured products, engineered building products, cabinets and furniture. Businesses in this industry that have chosen to develop in Parkland County include, but are not limited to, Westmark Products and Spruceland Millworks.
Coal, Oil and Gas
Conveniently located close to an abundant supply of resources, Parkland County is ideal for businesses involved in the supply and maintenance of coal, oil and gas industries. Businesses in these industries include, but are not limited to, Luscar Ltd., North American Construction Group, ATCO Gas, Fording Coal, Nova Construction Group and Concorde Well Servicing.
Advanced Manufacturing
Offering large sections of land at affordable prices, Parkland County is a popular destination for companies to build advanced manufacturing facilities. Many high-profile businesses have chosen to develop in the Acheson Industrial Area, Parkland County’s industrial hub, and have reported much success. These businesses include, but are not limited to, Winalta, Burnco, Kal Tire, Expocrete, Nova Pole, Empire Homes, and Beaver Plastics.
Transportation and Distribution
Parkland County is home to many businesses in the transportation sector – and rightly so – particularly considering the municipality’s strategic location. Some of the larger transportation-related companies currently operating in Parkland County include Edmonton Trailer, Sysco, National Fast Freight, Hayworth Equipment and Navistar.
Agriculture
The mixed agricultural industry is a vital part of the economy in Parkland County, contributing more than $50 million annually. Varity ranges from traditional field crop production of wheat, oats, barley and canola, to livestock and specialized vegetable and nursery operations. Field crops find their way to world markets for milling, malting and livestock feeds. And, with over one million consumers in the Parkland trading area, the County is a prime location for dairy and poultry farms.
Tourism
Parkland County’s scenic environment with forested areas, lakes and varied terrain has attracted numerous investments in golf courses, resorts, and other tourism-related facilities. The area boasts two provincial parks and has many natural wildlife areas, hiking trails and outdoor adventure opportunities.
